On 7 April 2026, Ina Agafonova participated in an international awareness-raising and networking workshop held in Constanța, Romania, dedicated to advancing cooperation on marine biodiversity and sturgeon conservation in the Black Sea region.
The event was organized by GeoEcoMar as part of the SturNet project and brought together researchers, public institutions, environmental organizations, and other key stakeholders from across the region. It provided an important platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and the strengthening of partnerships focused on addressing shared environmental challenges.
During the workshop, Ina Agafonova presented the SturNet project, outlining its main objectives, core activities, and expected long-term impact. The presentation highlighted the project’s efforts to improve the monitoring, protection, and sustainable management of sturgeon populations through the integration of digital tools, data collection systems, and innovative, data-driven approaches.
Particular attention was given to the role of technology in enhancing conservation practices. The use of digital mapping tools, mobile applications, and shared data platforms was presented as a key step toward more efficient monitoring and informed decision-making at both national and regional levels.
The discussions throughout the workshop addressed several major environmental pressures affecting the Black Sea ecosystem, including habitat degradation, river fragmentation, pollution, and the increasing impacts of climate change. These factors continue to pose significant risks to sturgeon populations and marine biodiversity as a whole, reinforcing the urgency of coordinated and science-based action.
In addition, the workshop emphasized the importance of cross-border cooperation, as sturgeon species migrate across national boundaries and require joint conservation efforts. Strengthening collaboration between countries, institutions, and research communities was identified as essential for achieving meaningful and lasting results.
The exchange of expertise and best practices during the event contributed to building a shared understanding of both the challenges and the opportunities in the region. It also supported the development of more integrated and effective strategies for biodiversity protection.
Participation in initiatives such as this workshop plays a key role in advancing regional cooperation, fostering innovation, and supporting the implementation of practical solutions. Through continued collaboration and the application of modern technologies, efforts like SturNet contribute to the long-term preservation of sturgeon species and the sustainable management of the Black Sea ecosystem.
