Today, August 27th, we celebrate the first-ever World Lakes Day—a global initiative dedicated to monitoring and protecting the health of lakes around the world.
Lakes hold about 90% of Earth’s surface freshwater supply, making them vital for life and ecosystems everywhere!
At the Foundation for Biodiversity Conservation in Bulgaria, we understand the critical importance of these bodies of water, especially in the Black Sea Basin region. Our analysis of the ecological and chemical status of our lakes shows that we have both successes and challenges.
Of the 12 lakes analyzed by the Black Sea River Basin Directorate's monitoring efforts, 25% show good ecological status. At the same time, the remaining 75%—including the Shabla and Varna Lakes—are in poor ecological condition due to high levels of various pollutants.
This data highlights the importance of continuous monitoring and conservation efforts, especially in the face of climate change and extreme weather events. Let's work together to care for our lakes—they are home to valuable biodiversity and are part of our national heritage.
Let's work together to protect our lakes and the incredible biodiversity they support!
Every drop counts!
