SturNet Project Advances with Cutting-Edge Equipment and Expert Team

The SturNet project is making significant strides in environmental monitoring, thanks to the acquisition of advanced equipment and the assembly of a team of seasoned experts. These developments are set to enhance our capacity to collect and analyze critical environmental data, thereby contributing to our overarching goal of biodiversity conservation.

Advanced Equipment Acquisition

Protection of biodiversity in Bulgaria Foundation, already in the first months of the project's implementation, successfully purchased and delivered innovative equipment for detailed analysis of the aquatic environment.

Multiparametric System for Abiotic Environmental Factors in Water: The Portable WTW Multi 3630 IDS, equipped with electrodes for pH and dissolved oxygen measurements allows for precise in-situ analysis. Portable WTW pHotoFlex device facilitates the measurement of various parameters, including turbidity and concentrations of nitrates, nitrites, ammonium ions, total nitrogen, and phosphates. Vacuum Filtration Distillation apparatus is essential for sample preparation, particularly in the collection of environmental DNA (eDNA).

These instruments will be instrumental in our sampling campaigns scheduled from March to December. We aim to collect eDNA and gather data on parameters such as pH, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), conductivity, dissolved oxygen, temperature, turbidity, and nutrient concentrations.

Expert Team Assembly

To ensure the effective utilization of this equipment and the integrity of our data collection efforts, we have contracted a team of highly experienced professionals:

  • Ecologist: Holding a master's degree in Ecology and Ecosystem Protection, our lead ecologist will oversee the environmental monitoring activities, ensuring adherence to scientific protocols and standards.

  • Ichthyologist: This fish biology expert will provide insights into aquatic ecosystems, particularly in relation to fish populations and their habitats.

  • GIS Expert: Specializing in Geographic Information Systems, our GIS expert will manage spatial data, facilitating the mapping and analysis of environmental variables across our study areas.

The integration of advanced technological tools with specialized expertise underscores our commitment to rigorous environmental monitoring and data collection. These efforts are pivotal in informing conservation strategies and promoting sustainable management of biodiversity within the project's scope.

We will continue to provide updates on our progress and share findings as the project advances. Stay tuned for more information on our initiatives and outcomes!
