The State Environmental Inspectorate of the Southwestern Region of Ukraine has issued an official warning about the appearance of an extremely dangerous species in the waters of the Black Sea—Lagocephalus sceleratus, also known as the silver pufferfish or blunthead puffer.

This fish belongs to the Tetraodontidae family and originates from the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region. In recent years, due to climate change and migration through the Suez Canal, it has spread into the Mediterranean and now the Black Sea.
Why is it so dangerous?
Highly toxic: The fish contains a potent neurotoxin—tetrodotoxin—which remains deadly even after cooking. Just a few milligrams can cause paralysis or death in humans.
Aggressive predator: It feeds on native species and disrupts local ecosystems.
Damages fishing gear: It tears through nets and spoils catches, causing serious economic harm to fishermen.
If you spot this fish in Bulgarian waters or on the beach:
✅ Do not touch or eat it, under any circumstances. It remains toxic even when cooked.
✅ Take a photo or video, preferably with an object nearby for scale (e.g. a hand, ruler, or coin).
✅ Record the exact location using GPS coordinates or nearby landmarks.
✅ Report immediately to:
The Executive Agency for Fisheries and Aquaculture (IARA)
The Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water (RIEW)
Or call 112, and you will be directed to the proper authorities.
By acting quickly, you'll help scientists and officials track the spread of this hazardous species and protect local wildlife and public health.
